Researching information for our books

Yesterday, we worked with Mrs. Robertson in the LMC to learn more about researching our topics.  Do you know the difference between a browser and a search engine?  KidRex was a favorite to help find out some of the answers to our I wonder questions.

Puritan Villages

Q: Where did you graze cows in Colonial Days?
A: The town green, of course.

Area

In math we have been learning all about area.  Ask your child to explain how to find the area of a shape.  What did we learn about standard and non-standard units?

Count the square inches to find the area of our designs.

"I Have a Dream"

Students hoped that one day...
"everyone will get along."
"there's no fighting, just nice smiling and good conversation."
"everyone will have a home, food and clothing."

I Wonder...

We took a trip down to the LMC to learn about a new way to do research.  Where did we start?  We came up with an "I Wonder" question to guide us. This helps us to figure out what we need to know.

Nonfiction Scavenger Hunt

Good readers notice and use nonfiction text and graphic features to better understand a text.  We looked through many books to find the glossary, index, map, photographs, captions, and more!

Action vs Reaction

We used K'Nex to make Newton mobiles. This helped us to discover Newton's Third Law of Motion. If you want your car to move forwards, you have to turn the wheel backwards.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction force.

Newton's Second Law of Motion

Which has more mass, a golf ball or a ping pong ball?  Students did a science experiment to discover more about Newton's Second Law of Motion.
